Artificial Turf

Artificial turf is simply a man made surface made from synthetic fibres which has been specifically made to look like natural grass. Artificial turf grass was first used in the sports industry to replace normal grass – its main benefits being very low maintenance and very high strength and durability.

Because of its ever increasing and wide spread use, synthetic turf is now being used quite extensively in domestic applications like artificial turf lawns. As it requires no trimming (or mowing) and no irrigation (watering) it’s ideal for a perfect looking lawn for quite literally all year and conditions and weathers.

Another ideal use for domestic artificial turf grass is on lawns where the home has one or more dogs. Most dogs, large ones especially, can devastate a lawn, especially during very dry and very wet weather periods (not unlike we have in most parts of the UK). An artificial turf lawn can prevent that problem completely, as most types of synthetic turf can easily stand up to the daily abuse from even the biggest dogs.

The early part of the 21st century saw some significant developments in the quality and durability of artificial grass, together with the quality of materials used for infill and foundation, to the extent that the current generation of synthetic grass is now regarded as being just about as safe to play on as a typical natural grass lawn, and in cold and icy conditions it’s considered even safer.

As recently as 2010, new materials that are used to infill the artificial turf were introduced that meet the most recent and most stringent environmental requirements, which means that not only is artificial turf the ideal solution for a low maintenance and perfect looking lawn all year round, it’s also extremely environmentally friendly.

To cap it off, artificial turf is now being used extensively in the United States in both residential and commercial landscaping projects. This is largely due to the high quality and variety of available synthetic grasses, combined with the significantly reduced costs of maintenance and ongoing care compared to those of natural grass useage. The icing on the cake being that artificial turf provides a considerable water conservation measure, which can be a concern in some areas of the UK during summer months.
